How are we going to do it?

Other than the obvious of getting out of bed and walking (as good old Forest Gump did!) we will be:

  • Staying with friends and at B&Bs and Youth Hostels along the way.
  • Wearing up to the minute gear including:
  • Rucksacks with integral water containers.
  • Titanium walking sticks.
  • Micro fleece and next to skin clothing
  • Lightweight but strong walking boots,
  • Wristband GPS (Global Positioning Satellite), which will tell us where we
  • are and how far we've walked etc.
  • And, essentially, lightweight waterproofs.
  • Plus many small items like plaster for the inevitable blisters
  • Toilet gear
  • Mobile phone
  • Gloves, hat.
  • Maps and guides etc. etc,
  • Looking forward to the company of friends and family joining us along the way.
And when we get bored of each others company (which seems unlikely considering how much we BOTH have to talk about), we can switch on our little music players and enjoy the countryside to the sounds of music. All very Julie Andrews!

Progress

15 days to go and Helen has bought her waterproof clothing and very smart she looks in it too!

She's also getting a bit high tech and gone for an Mp3 player so that she and Emma can listen to different rhythm's of music depending on how fast or (more likely how slow) they're walking.

Monday will bring a training day of anything up to 12 miles carrying our kit We're exploring Haldon Forest as it seems that lots of new trails have been set up.

The Weston Morning News is publishing a small article about the walk . Emma has been busy getting lots of material from Cancer research This includes T shirts Balloons and various forms. We now have an official code for our fundraising bid. Click details on this page . More soon

From Emma

"I, however, am 28 this year and am also making this walk a present to myself. I was thrilled when Helen asked if I'd like to do the walk with her and now can't wait to get started.
I have been living in the South West for the last 4 years and absolutely love being here, I moved with my fiancé Paul and we are still in love with the magic of the countryside around us.
This walk will be a dream for me to feel connected with nature and enjoy all that the coastline and it's people have to offer.
My Grandad is still alive thanks to the treatment he received for cancer and being able to raise money for Cancer Research UK will help me say 'thank you'. I also wish to walk for Paul's mum Evelyn who died from breast cancer and for Helen who has shown great strength during the last few years.

I hope that you can join us and share the challenge."

About Helen

From Helen

"I am 60 this year, this walk is a present to myself and from my patient and supportive husband John. Traveling through life is, after all, a series of steps. To take one step at a time, however slowly, will bring you nearer your goal, whether in your own personal development, your work or treatment for illness.

I have held the dream of walking the whole of the South West Coast Path since my first experience of walking from St Ives to Penzance many years ago (we camped and it was Easter and cold but it didn't dampen my dream!) Apart from fulfilling my own dream I want to raise money for Cancer Research UK The fact that I and millions of others are still alive today testifies that Cancer Research UK is working towards better treatment and finding a cure for this insidious disease. P.S. I'd also like to see my grandchildren grow up too!"
